Freestyle Report
Patiently, the freestylers have been waiting for this day. Finally, it should reset, so that the first freestyle competitions of the SEAT Kitesurf World Cup could be played 2010th At noon it was done: Heat 1 was started. Stefan Permien, Jan Rogge, Jerrie van de Kop, and Leonard Rose dueled in the competition area. But then a burst of wind, the single elimination had to be postponed.
Despite the poor wind conditions the kite freestylers were dancing again in the afternoon the skies of Sylt. The casino Westerland donated 500 € prize for the most spectacular freestyle maneuvers of the day.
For men, the Brazilian Neto Alexander secured the prize money of 250 €. On a Wave Board, he conjured a pop to blind handlepass in the shaft.
The ladies were creative: the Swede Sofia Lennartsson and Briton Nicky Rudd presented themselves in a double on a Stand Up Paddle Board. The successful surface handle pass the Briton on the board brought the team victory.
For the racers again won two more races will be extended. A head-to-head race is in the offing for tomorrow’s final. After fourteen races will remain the Frenchman Bruno Sroka with wafer-thin lead over the Dutch Rolf van der Vlugt.
Even the third place at the time could theoretically still Julien Kerneur intervene in the title fight. Gunnar Biniasch is still the best German as fifth-placed in the field.
In the women caught the British woman Steph Bridge a perfect day. She went undefeated after two races from the water. In the overall it still remains in third place, behind the leading Dutchwoman Katja Roose, and the Frenchwoman Caroline Adrien
Original Story on Kitesurf Europe
After 12 races at the European Kite Racing Championships at Sylt/Germany, the top three men are separated by less then three points, with the leading Bruno Sroka (FRA, Cabrinha) and runner-up Rolf van der Vlugt (NED, Airush) only 0.3 points apart.
With possibly more races tomorrow and the last discard tensions are high who is getting the European Championship crown in the end.
After a nice and sunny, but windless day yesterday, the forecast promised good winds for today that would allow the freestyle competition to get underway. Unfortunately the wind never became strong enough for the more than 40 freestylers from all over Europe to show their talents on the water, but provided perfect conditions for another seven course races to be completed.
After the 10:00 hours skippersmeeting, the first warning signal of the day was made at 10:30 hrs sharp and the fleet sent into two rounds box course with a difficult downwind leg. The shifting winds made it even more difficult for the riders to find the perfect line. Three races where run back to back before the Race Committee gave the riders a break.
The lunch break was used to bring a new course on the board, this time a windward/leeward with a leeward gate. This proved to be a good call as the following four races, again sailed back to back, gave the riders some more options for tactics on the second upwind leg.
Standings after 12 races (3 discards), before protest hearings:
Men
1. Bruno Sroka (FRA, Cabrinha) 16.5 points
2. Rolf vd Vlugt (NED, Airush) 16.8 points
3. Julien Kerneur (FRA, Takoon) 19.4 points
4. Abel Lago (ESP, RRD) 24.5 points
5. Gunnar Biniasch (GER, Flysurfer) 36 points
Women
1. Katja Roose (NED, Airush) 9.2 points
2. Caroline Adrien (FRA, Cabrinha) 12.8 points
3. Steph Bridge (GBR, North) 22.7 points
4. Kari Schivebaag (NOR, Ozone) 27.2 points
5. Kathrin Borgwardt (GER, F-One) 51 points
The participants of the SEAT Kitesurf World Cup gathered yesterday together with many spectators to watch the German national-team, entering the final of the last sixteen. Right in the front of the Westerland’s beach, when the golden sunball dipped into the north sea, Özil scored and caused wild exultation. Right after this idyllic soccer coverage the kitesurfers met in the American Bistro to party till sunrise.
Today the exhausted athletes has had enough time to recover. Again bright sunshine but too less wind to start another competitions. Instead of kitesurfing the athletes take up the Fanatic Stand-Up challenge.
Wire-to-wire win for the British Steph Brige. She was the lucky one with the best start. Her compatriot Nicky Rudd has to settle for second.
The men-contest: Frenchman Bruno Sroka and the British Callum Edge batteld it out. Nip and tuck- race – Bruno has had the best start and was able to break away, but Callum could close the gap. At the same time both athletes sprinted out of the water. Callum Edge finally reached the finishing line while diving for the win
After an almost windy kickoff yesterday, with several unsuccessful starting attempts, five races could be completed today.
Bruno Sroka (FRA, Cabrinha) took the lead ahead of Julien Kerneur (FRA, Takoon) in close battling, Rolf van der Vlugt (NED, Airush) closely behind in third.
In the womens fleet the battle is on between Katja Roose (NED, Airush) in the lead, then Caroline Adrien (FRA, Cabrinha) and defending world champion Kari Schibevaag (NOR, Ozone).
The day kicked off with little hope for suitable wind, but the competitors from all over Europe where welcomed by a nice 11 knot seabreeze. Racing commenced at 10:40 with a two round windward-leeward course, and three more races followed back to back. After a lunch break the course was changed to a large box, and with the wind dropping to 8 knots along with pretty strong current it took the winner slightly more than 30 minutes to complete the race.
Racing was cancelled then for the rest of the day as the wind was further dropping.
